Re: What is the first big news item you can remember?
I barely give a shit about the news now, so am thinking I definitely didn't give a fuck back in the 80's.

Probably Lockerbie, Hungerford or Dunblane though I wouldn't have cared.

Probably should have been the Falklands as I would have been 7/8, but at that age things like that go over your head.

Re: What is the first big news item you can remember?
West Ham getting to the 1975 FA Cup Final when I was a 5 year old. I remember seeing the claret and blue vastly outnumbering the black and white in the windows of houses (posters, scarves/rosettes etc) as we drove atound in the days leading up to it, and being very happy because of it.

Non football would be the death of Elvis. Was on holiday in Cornwall with the family and Mum was in tears.

Re: What is the first big news item you can remember?
Apollo 11 moon landing.
We were living in Miami at the time and Dad took us to see the rocket on a tour of Cape Kennedy. It was in the vehicle assembly building at the time (there were small clouds near the roof) and it was perched on the launch platform complete with the tower.
Still the most impressive thing I have ever seen even given that I was 4.

Definitely the Apollo 13 mission - in infants school (Cann Hall, Leytonstone) we had a special assembly to pray for safe return of the astronauts

First tv memory was 1975 FA Cup Final. First news was probably the death of Sid James for some reason probably due to being a Carry On fan as a kid. Elvis sticks in the mind though in 77.
